“Baby Boy or Baby Girl?”

A girl

“It’s a boy or a girl?”

This is perhaps the first and most common question asked at the birth of a baby.
In case if the newborn is a boy, great joy and excitement is shown and greetings are exchanged.

On the other hand, if the new born baby is a girl, a cold feeling of sympathy is expressed.
So, the gender discrimination, an important social issue starts right from here.

The birth of a baby girl, in literal terms, is taken as an unpleasant responsibility in our society.

People want their majority children to be male to get the continuation of their family and inheritance.

Also, they love to have a son in order to get financially strong in future; as they think a son can get them far more decent earning than a daughter.

From the very beginning, they raise a daughter by keeping the thought in the mind that one day she will be married, so there is no need to spend money on her good schooling and other things.
This is a very depressing part of our society.

This very attitude of gender inequality is a constant source of fear and depression for many women. They usually become very depressed and anxious about the gender of the baby before it is born.

In some poor and uneducated families, it is even possible to abort the child on knowing that its gender is not male.

However, either a family is educated or not, this very attitude of gender inequality is always present in some of its forms.
Sara (name changed for confidentiality purpose) is an educated young girl, who got married about two years ago.

She recently gave birth to a beautiful baby girl.
When she was asked about her feelings of becoming the first-time mom, what she told was quite depressing.

She said that like every other woman she was very happy at first about the good news.

Everyone in her family was happy too. As far as the gender of the new member of the family was concerned, everyone was expecting a boy, and they kept on wishing Sara to be blessed with a baby boy.

She further added that at first, during the early days of her pregnancy she was not bothered by the gender of the baby.
But as the time passed, things changed in her mind.

Everybody’s wish for the baby boy became a source of fear and depression for her.
Inside her, she also started wishing the baby to be a boy.

Out of fear, she on her regular prenatal checkups never asked her doctor about the gender of the baby. Time passed and the day arrived when she delivered a healthy baby girl.

Everyone in the family was not that much excited as they should have been.

All the family pressure didn’t allow Sara, herself to get happy and enjoy the precious feeling of becoming a mother. And this was perhaps the most unfair thing to her.

This is the story of every other woman in our society.

The family, relatives and the society all put so much pressure on a woman that she does not consider herself to be able to rejoice and celebrate the birth of little girls, who are the most innocent creation of the God.

This is a social dilemma of ours which need to be addressed.

We have to show affection for the little girls too, as they also need our love and attention.
